Charles dickens by claire tomalin6/5/2023 ![]() ![]() More recently, I read Tomalin’s sterling bit of detective work on Nelly Ternan, The Invisible Woman, which told an extremely convincing tale of the young actress who became Dicken’s mistress when he left his wife Catherine. I remember reading Peter Ackroyd’s enormous version of events some twenty years ago and thinking it was clear Ackroyd grew to dislike his subject as the book progressed (there were odd metafictional interludes in which Ackroyd engaged in dialogues that sought, I thought, to defend indiscretions and mis-steps). My only defence is that at least I know I’m a bit strange when it comes to Dickens. In a recent piece in the Guardian, she talked briefly about the kind of strange fans Dickens has and how protective they get about the man in question. I have to admit, I was nervous at the prospect of reading Claire Tomalin’s biography of Dickens. ![]()
