Opstand by Veronica Roth6/10/2023 The foreshadowing for the third book is also scary but brilliant. I was absolutely flabbergasted and shocked at the ending. I also didn't like the pacing of the book because it was super fast at the beginning and tried to brush off the Aftermath of the first book way too quickly.Īpart from that I thought it was okay the super spoilery stuff was very interesting and had me hooked. The fact I was more interested in the side characters is something super telling. I won't say which villians fall but I feel like they were wasted after being built up in the first book and thats such a shame. Four is so inconsistent and much more horrible and Tris is somehow falling for manipulations from Four's abuser. In the society there in you'd expect secrets being kept to be understandable. Four × Tris felt so stale as well as their fights. First I hated the characterisation it partly makes me wish someone else was brought in to help consult Veronica to write a good relationship. There were some stuff I liked but some stuff I didn't.īefore I get into what i liked I have to share my dislikes. I'm going to try keep this spoiler free but this book definitely felt like a step down from the first book.

Spelled by betsy schow series6/10/2023 This book is a really cute, fun, whimsical fairy tale retelling with a lot of appeal! The story follows Dorthea, who’s lived a sequestered life, just in case she is the Emerald Princess who has been foretold to burn the world down. Trying to fix her prince problem by wishing on a (cursed) star royally backfires, leaving the kingdom in chaos and her parents stuck in some place called "Kansas." Now it's up to Dorthea and her pixed off prince to find the mysterious Wizard of Oz and undo the curse.before it releases the wickedest witch of all and spells The End for the world of Story. But a forced marriage to the brooding prince Kato is so not what Dorthea had in mind for her enchanted future. Sure being the crown princess of Emerald has its perks-like Glenda Original ball gowns and Hans Christian Louboutin heels. My content rating: YA (Nothing more than kissing, Some fantasy violence)įairy Tale Survival Rule #32: If you find yourself at the mercy of a wicked witch, sing a romantic ballad and wait for your Prince Charming to save the day. David6/10/2023 The story is entertaining and engrossing, but somewhat uneven. It is definitely worth readg, but I may not return.Ī triumvirate of splendid mystery thrillers The plot has several interesting twists that prevent the worst of the terrorist acts from occuring. As the terrorists target cultural treasures, they are described in detail and their import stated. The action moves through Europe, America, Mexico, Russia, and the Balkans. The plot is imaginative and interesting, although the narrative becomes a little preachy when detailing the impact of Islam. The terrorists are opposed by a small team from Mossad that gets reintroduced and described in detail each time they appear. Every acronym is spelled out each time it is used. The style of writing is straightforward, but suffers from extreme repetition. All the characters seem to have super powers of some kind, and a limit on morals. Le Docteur is presented as an extremely handsome man who plows his way through a wide variety of willing females. the leader,"Le Docteur," continues through the books, picking up a lover in the second who is an experienced and capable pilot, among other things. The terrorist acts are different in each of the books in the series, and the continuing characters are a small group. This series covers the activities of a small terrorist group called 'Nemesis." It follows the various acts of violence triggered by a leader who seeks to prove his thesis that a small group can influence the entire world. Beeston, one of Neptune’s workers, from the classroom when he came to collect the newly found ring? How come no one knew about the ring? Meanwhile, back at home, Emily is wondering where her parents went off too after their most recent argument?įast forward, Neptune puts a curse on Emily that she would never be fully mermaid or fully human and this scared me because it’s such a horrible curse for her to never be anything fully. There were a few things in the storyline that raised some questions for example: Why did Ms.Finwave, Emily’s teacher, shoo off Mr. Years ago Neptune tossed the ring out of sight because of he was heartbroken that he lost his human and mortal wife to the sea, and cast away any future mermaid and human marriages. They got started with the action fast! Emily’s class went on a field trip with jewels that seemed cool, and that’s where she discovered one of the rings, hidden under a bush, bad hiding. Two rings that represented love and peace turned into two rings that transformed into hatred and betrayal. So the book starts off with Neptune’s (the king of mermaids) wedding, then goes into Emily’s parents arguing. Find out below: Unfortunately, you need both for an effective book: if not within yourself, then in collaboration with others who can help you realize your goal. The author herself says several times throughout the novel that she's not the analytical research type but a feeling/perceiving sort. I felt as though I understood the aspects of emergent strategy far better through these examples than the bloated descriptions in the book's beginning, and that makes me sad. The book shines in the final section, likely because it's the part of the book that illustrates examples of how to actually practice emergent strategy. The introduction was an excessive ~40 pages and encapsulated the book's overall issue: not enough organization and trimming to communicate a vitally important concept to anyone who's not on the same wavelength as the author. Countless quotes bog down the overall message and create a murkiness that I as a reader could never recover from. I never felt as though I had enough forewarning when the book would suddenly divert into a blog post or speech. As it stands, Emergent Strategy is a rather disjointed sea of thoughts, quotes (so. I say this with the utmost love and respect for both emergent strategy as concept and the author: this desperately needed an editor. The novel begins with a Stone Age family whose daughter begins to realize that there is a supernatural force, then leads us to the beginnings of monotheism, the Davidic kingdom, Hellenistic times, Roman times, etc. Archaeologists digging at the tell at Makor uncover artifacts from each layer, which then serve as the basis for a chapter exploring the lives of the people involved with that artifact. The Source uses for its central device a fictional tell in northern Israel called "Makor" ( Hebrew: "source").Ī parallel frame story set in modern-day Israel supports the historical timeline.
