It certainly seems that evil triumphs in the end, since Mr Hyde banishes Dr Jekyll. Dr Jekyll wants to kill (suggested in his name) the part of himself that he hides (an even clearer name parallel). He does not, therefore,use the words of Freudian psychology, yet repression, sublimation and denial all feature. But Stevenson was writing before Freud and before modern psychology. We are very familiar with this idea now – split personality has formed the basis of many novels and has been explored in many scientific works. Hyde The major theme of the novel is the dual nature of the human psyche.
